Grindeye - Bloom

-
Grindeye is an instrumental post-metal band from the valley of Trier, Germany.  They formed in 2015 and I believe " Bloom " is their second release. I love the sound of this album---it was recorded completely in analogue and that difference can definitely be heard.  According to their bandcamp page, the band wanted it to sound as "live" as possible.  As far as my humble opinion is concerned, they pulled it off and then some.  The production and mix has such a warm sound to it; the instruments envelope me in the way that few albums this year have. The songwriting is truly impressive. It is expansive and imaginative while not having any bloat to it. Everything is exactly where it should be, a process that results in smooth flowing music despite how formless it truly is. I can't help but feel the music and the song titles go hand in hand.....maybe it's my imagination running wild but my explanations of why I think this way will also help explain why the songs a...

Shores of Null - Homesick

Shores of Null is an Italian doom metal band who formed in 2013.  Their latest release, “ Homesick ,” is their fifth full-length album; they have also released a live album and a split.  The latter, " Latitudes of Sorrow ," was a release I also reviewed—you can check that out HERE . I’ve been following this band since my days at Metal Temple, when I reviewed 2020’s “ Beyond the Shores (On Death and Dying) .”  Most recently, they released a split album last year with another stalwart of the modern doom scene, Convocation .  Shores of Null ’s sound on that album was probably their most destructive and horrific—whether they did it to match Convocation ’s own brand of doom or not, I didn’t expect them to continue that path on their next full-length album.   Instead, “ Homesick ,” is the next logical step coming off their previous full-length album, the amazing “ The Loss of Beauty .”  That’s a good thing because, at the time, I thought that album was thei...

Hexecutioner - Tornit

Hexecutioner is a doom/stoner/sludge metal band from Seattle that formed in 2020. Their latest release, “ Tornit ,” is their second full-length album; they have also released a demo. The band’s style is Doom with a capital DOOM. It embraces the elements of the genre without shame—and bludgeons my ear drums with them. The songs are mid-paced and built upon RIFFS, RIFFS, RIFFS, and more RIFFS. Oh and some RIFFS too.   The band’s approach is both classic and hypnotic—they take one riff, run with it, and hammer it over and over until I realized I had head banged so much I turned into a worm. But that’s just fine with me, because the next riff arrived and pulled me back together—and the process repeats. I don’t get high but if I did, I could see myself listening to this and then waking up three days later naked in the woods.   The tone and fuzz of these masterful notes, the bass included, laces their brand of doom with a filthy layer of sludge. It’s heavy as a real...
