Perdition Temple- Malign Apotheosis

Perdition Temple is a blackened Death Metal from Florida who formed in 2009. Their latest album, “Malign Apotheosis,” is their fifth full-length album; they also released an EP and a split.

Malign Apotheosis,” is pretty much what I expected from this band—and that isn't a bad thing at all. This album finds the band zeroing in on being as fast, abrasive and nasty as possible. Sure, it isn't reinventing the wheel but it does fucking destroy it. And that is all it needs to do.

The production is a little more muted and dismal than previous efforts but it works better for their sound this time around. With a band like this, I don't expect (or even want) crystal clear production. The songs are riff based, riding the often thin line between the extremes of black and death metal. But the genres may share extremity are different—but this album definitely balances the two styles well.

The drums are absolutely insane and compliment the songs—bulldozing with a purpose. Much can be said for the bass as well—an assault on the ears if there ever was one (compliment). I like how lean this album is too. Its 8 songs finish in just over 34 minutes—-the band wastes absolutely no time with their ear damage, flesh ripping blackened death metal.

The solos are quite something too. They are wild but make sense in context of the place in each song’s structure and balance technical precision with unbridled energy.

Resurrect Damnation,” is about as blistering of an opening as I expected and might even surpass those expectations. The riffs and vocals hammer away with the same intensity while the drums and bass also do their best to know over this mountain of metal. The song grows more intense as it races towards its zenith at the mid section, where the riffs and drums attempt to see who can eviscerate the fastest.

Purging Conflagration,” begins with a truly terrifyingly deep set groove from the guitars and bass. Both instruments provide a maniacal jumping board for the drums and vocals to attack from—-this song is very intense with a good pair of headphones and a high volume. The riffs are a bit more intricate and chaotic in the later half, adding a last minute layer of carnage.

“Malign Apotheosis,” gives me massive Morbid Angel vibes in the beginning before its razor sharp notes begin to slice through whatever I have that amounts of as soul. The speed the song thrives on has moments throughout when it somehow gets faster—these bursts of intensity are inspiring and downright brutal. I actually made it to the final song, “Fell Sorcery,” without passing out but my neck might fall off before I finish. If the previous seven songs were like rolling up a tube of toothpaste until the top explodes…then this is the top flying across the room. Just after the solo ends, the song enters a groove around the 2:50 mark that propels the song through twisted corridors of extremity until the final seconds finally arrive.

Perdition Temple continue to prove their worth to the extreme metal underground and “Malign Apotheosis,” just might be their best yet.
