Destroy My Brains - Wilt
Destroy My Brains is one of those bands that is the antithesis to the world itself. They are up there with Primitive Man and Anaal Nathrakh for one of the most extreme and pissed off metal bands of all time.
“Wilt,” continues that trend—and then some. This album sounds like what nonmetal heads hear when someone plays them extreme metal.
For a metalhead like me (and you), all this angry noise is music to the ears. “Wilt,” is a filthy, dangerous album that embraces the mentality that metal shouldn't be safe or comfortable. When a boomer or normie says metal music will send you to hell, guess what? They and everyone else is already there. The world we live in is fucking insane and gets worse everyday. Destroy My Brains and “Wilt” doesn't turn away from this and instead steers into the skid…and exploding bodies the entire damn time.
The band's core sound of “fucking a cinder block raw” remains intact. Doom, sludge, hardcore, death…whatever you want to call this or whatever it may or may not be, the common factor here is how extreme it all is.
With the exception of two songs, each track os over 7 minutes in length and two of those go past the 10 minute mark. That's a lot of metal to handle in the albums nearly 1 hour runtime.
But despite “Wilt's” constant sand blasting of the ear holes, the album has an incredibly smooth flow and every song feels far shorter than it really is.
“OCI (obsessive compulsive imploder),” has one of the best song titles I've heard this year and it's a beast of an opener. As the shortest song, it gets the blood and guile flowing and is a great introduction to the punishment that will befall you on the rest of the songs.
This song makes it brutally evident of one important factor that exists across the album: the synergy of this band is on POINT. Advancing armies don't have this kind of razor sharp focuses or penchant for destruction.
Sludge and doomed out riffs march across this broken landscape while insane vocals and a rhythm section that seems impossible pushes the song towards a brutal finality.
“Burn the Virgin,” is one of the longest songs and its so goddamn ominous. The clean tones in the beginning are foreboding instead of relaxing and I love the tone of the distortion as it seeps in.
The song is at its best when the guitars and bass drop moody, suffocating notes while the drums and vocals fucking RAGE.I really appreciate how well the groove of the bass is maintained throughout as the song grows more and more caustic.
“Downgrade,” is a to-the-point five minute burst of unbridled violence. The first half hammers down nonstop with drums that seem surreal and riffs that actually may have caved in my head. Can sludge get sludgier? The last couple minutes proved that it can.
The best is saved for last with the title track and its monumental 11 minute durge of unforgiving attitude and contempt for this shit hole existence. Everything great about this band's journey and the album as a whole is presented here in shards of glass that rain down upon the senses.
Destroy My Brain's “Wilt,” is a musical tour de force. It's bold and brazen incorporation of all the bad things so many choose not to face is engaging and arresting. This is an absolute must listen album as the second half the year hits us. Will things get better? Doubt it but the one advantage of living through the fall of society is that it gives birth to monstrous albums like this.
