Filth - Death Exhibition

Filth is a death metal band from Sweden, who formed in 2022.  Their latest album, “Death Exhibition,” is their second full-length release; they have also released a demo.   This Is some nasty death metal. Sometimes I feel like death metal is too overproduced, especially with the more modern bands. But “Death Exhibition,” is a rawer approach that sounds like it was mastered in a studio covered in a decayed soupy mix of racial swamp waters and blood.

The tone on the instruments live through this sound, casting out filthy riffs, drumming passages of nightmarish might and bass that might be a demon. Speaking of the bass: the production may be raw, but the mix is on point and the bass barrels through it for one of the heavier low end sounds I've heard so far this year. Much like Incantation or Autopsy, Filth isn't afraid to add a hefty amount of doom metal to its more aggressive side.  The slower parts are really powerful and showcase just how extreme this band can get. With that said, the various tempos complement each other and make them even more potent and meaningful. 


The first full song, “Split Casket” exemplifies this. Those opening riffs and drums…doomed out death metal that embraces with clawed hands.  This song, and others too of course, has really well-done solos that have a disturbing tone to them that add another layer of grime.


I like that it's both a punishing album and one that gets to the point. It is just under 35 mins in length and none of songs are long or flashy. The band get gets in, gets off and gets out.  But music this insane needs to flow well and, fortunately, this album has zero issues in this regard. “Born to a Corpse,” begins slow and thick then seamlessly transforms into a light fast tempo rage filled death metal onslaught.  It feels very natural with every note placed methodically in the chaos.


“Sadistic Ways,” is one of the best songs here because it shows off every aspect of the band and the talents they bring. The deep roar of the death growls is perfect for the style and the song overall is a groove fest that's catchier than it has a right to be.


The final song, “Rotted Life,” is definitely my favorite. It's a little longer than the rest so the band has time to really let the blood-soaked ground take in all the elements. It also has a some very subtle melody near the end which is a nice touch.


All in all, Filth's “Death Exhibition,” will appeal to deathheads who normally shy away from doom (and vice versa) because it balances two levels of extremity very well.

Hexecutioner - Tornit

Hexecutioner is a doom/stoner/sludge metal band from Seattle that formed in 2020. Their latest release, “ Tornit ,” is their second full-length album; they have also released a demo. The band’s style is Doom with a capital DOOM. It embraces the elements of the genre without shame—and bludgeons my ear drums with them. The songs are mid-paced and built upon RIFFS, RIFFS, RIFFS, and more RIFFS. Oh and some RIFFS too.   The band’s approach is both classic and hypnotic—they take one riff, run with it, and hammer it over and over until I realized I had head banged so much I turned into a worm. But that’s just fine with me, because the next riff arrived and pulled me back together—and the process repeats. Doomherre - Plaguelords

Doomherre is a Swedish doom metal band who formed in 2021. Their latest release “ Plaguelords ” is their second full-length album. I reviewed their debut “ Bonegoat ” a couple years ago for Metal Temple; I found it to be an impressive debut so does Doomherre continue their upward march or do they fall into the sophomore slump? Short story? They are better than ever. Long story? Read on. The power trio upgrades their power to massive currents and nonstop surges. “ Plaguelords ,” is more groovy and harder hitting than the debut. However, it is also more melodic when it needs to be–and catchy as hell in places.  The production is much more dynamic and explosive. Each instrument hits loud and true with a lot of weight behind each note. The bass is notable, a constant thunderous performance that boosts the entire band to the next level.
