Ristridi - Ride the Storm

Ristridi is a metal band from Germany, who formed in 2023.  Their latest release, “Ride the Storm,” is their full-length debut but they have previously released an EP and a compilation/covers album.   It’s actually a one-man band, from musician Michael Wöß (Omega Point, Sektor) who handles all the instruments.  Guest/session members Alex "Ax" Meyer and Andreas "Anti" Schätz handle the harsh and clean vocals, respectfully.

Their sound combines power metal with elements of melodic death, particularly in the vocals.  As expected, “Ride the Storm,” is a high-octane album with energy that is full to bursting.  The album is 8 tracks across a runtime of just over 32 minutes so it’s a quick ride and doesn't waste any time from song to song.  No intros, outros, or interludes…just a band throwing out eight bangers and it works wonders for them.

There isn’t one song on here that isn’t catchy or filled with vibrant melodies and malicious speed.  Whether you listen to it from beginning to end or choose a random song, you are guaranteed to have a good time.  Does it reinvent the wheel?  No, but it sends that wheel down the hill at 1000 miles an hour. 

The production values are nothing short of amazing: the album sounds like a dream and each of the instruments display a full sound with plenty of heft.  The vocals are fantastic too, a clean approach with more extreme examples thrown in here and there.  But they aren’t overly falsetto and have the perfect tone for this style. 

The album opens with the blaze of the title track.  Within seconds, the band is firing on all cylinders:  fast paced riffs, an army of drums, and bass that rumbles along like a freight train. The chorus is massive and I like the dynamics of the vocals as they switch between power metal vocals and lines flavored with MDM.  The band has plenty of melody, of course, but also brings the pain with non-stop riffage in the later half. 

“They Fate Forged in Vengeance,” throws in some heavy metal flourishes and an epic sound that leads into one hell of a chorus.  The guitars/bass in between the lyrical stanzas hit pretty damn hard and I like the fact the band really never lets up.  After the chorus hits the final time, a wonderfully melodic solo births out from it and brings the song home on a high note.

Even in an album that is catchy, “King Under Mountain,” stands out as an earworm.  The opening guitar harmonies are gripping from the beginning.  The riffs are simple but very effective and push the song ever forward while the different vocal styles throw in playful dynamics.  The second half of the song features some chunk-style riffs that are mosh ready and another solo ends the song as the rhythm section stomps around like a beast. 

The final song, “God Will Avenge Us,” is a mini epic with its soaring leads that color the opening with majestic might.  This one of the more intense songs on the album, with the riffs and harsh vocals providing a double dose of heaviness.  The chorus is towering, but the standout moment is after the 2:30 moment when the layered vocals hit—it’s jaunty, almost like a Pirate anthem and one of the best things on the album.

All in all, Ristridi’s “Ride the Storm,” is a short but sweet power metal album that offers unlimited energy, catchy songs, and guarantees performances so good you’ll want to hit that repeat button soon as the last song ends.
